About us

We support your legal department with specialist knowledge

cogito.legal Rechtsanwälte, a German commercial law firm

cogito.legal is a commercial law firm specialising in managed legal services. For us, legal tech is not a buzzword but the implementation of software-based solutions for our clients. We embrace digitalisation and remain personal advisers — not faceless service providers.

At every level of advice, our lawyers and legal staff bring many years of experience, both as external counsel and in-house. It covers in particular IT, media, copyright and data protection law as well as infrastructure and competition law in the energy, telecommunications and media sectors. Digitalisation connects these subjects and creates new opportunities as well as new risks; both call for an open and flexible mindset, commercially and in legal advice.

Services

Examples from our advisory practice

Managed legal services

A delivery model for legal services, not a different hourly rate. We offer service packages built partly from standardised modules — with clearly described deliverables and prices fixed before the work begins.

  • Defined scope of work
  • Fixed prices instead of hourly billing
  • Control over process and cost

Legal outsourcing

At short notice we provide a lawyer with in-house experience who works pragmatically on site or remotely, like an interim manager — with a full law firm organisation behind them.

  • Deployment without a briefing-in period
  • On site or remote
  • Several subjects in parallel

A lawyer inside your legal department

For flexible support of your projects we provide a lawyer who is directly reachable by your business units through an internal email address. Internally they work like in-house counsel; externally they represent the company.

  • Internal email address
  • Direct line to the business units
  • Correspondence with authorities and opponents

Cover for absences

Holiday, illness or a resignation quickly creates a gap. We take over ongoing matters so that neither quality suffers nor a mandate has to be turned down — for businesses and for law firms alike.

  • Take-over at short notice
  • Also for law firms
  • Professional duty of confidentiality

Absorbing project peaks

A project demands more attention at short notice than day-to-day business allows — or expertise the legal department covers only in outline. We provide both on fixed terms.

  • Additional capacity for a defined period
  • Specialist expertise as needed
  • No overtime, no loss of quality

Contract management

Review, drafting and negotiation of contracts in day-to-day operations — the field in which we most frequently work for legal departments.

  • Review and negotiation
  • Templates and approval routes
  • Deadlines and renegotiation

Infrastructure and rights of way

Rights of way under the German Telecommunications and Energy Industry Acts, network roll-out and access to existing infrastructure — one of the fields in which we have worked in-house for years. Set out in depth at infrastrukturrecht.com.

  • Rights of way under the TKG and EnWG
  • Network roll-out and access
  • Energy and telecommunications

Data protection and IT law

Data protection in live projects, processing agreements, software and IT contracts — handled by the firm's specialist lawyers and certified data protection officers. Set out in depth at datenschutzrechtsanwälte.com.

  • GDPR in project work
  • Data processing agreements
  • Software and IT contracts

Legal tech and process design

By combining legal expertise, process design and technology we take you to your objective transparently and efficiently. Where like matters arise in large numbers, we map them in our own software.

  • Standardised modules
  • Software-supported processing
  • Traceable turnaround times

Representation in court

If a matter turns into a dispute, it stays with the same firm. We represent you out of court and before the courts — without the facts having to be reconstructed for the litigation.

  • Out-of-court correspondence
  • Representation before the courts
  • The same lawyers as in day-to-day work

How we work

One dedicated lawyer per mandate

No rotating team. The responsible lawyer stays the same and is familiar with your processes; cover is arranged and knows the portfolio as well.

Prices agreed in advance

The scope of work is agreed, not billed. You know what a matter costs before it starts — and we carry the risk that it takes longer than expected.

Lawyers with in-house experience

Anyone we send into a legal department has worked in one. That saves explaining why approval routes, budgets and business units work the way they do.

Professional confidentiality

We are lawyers, not a service provider with access to your files. Everything we learn is covered by the professional duty of confidentiality — including where we assist other law firms.

Practical questions

Questions businesses ask us

How do managed legal services differ from hourly billing?

An hourly billing model gives no incentive to reduce complexity or to work quickly. Managed legal services instead agree the scope of work: you receive clearly defined deliverables at prices fixed in advance and retain control over process and cost. We carry the risk that a matter takes longer than expected.

How quickly can someone start?

At short notice — that is the point of the offering. Our lawyers have worked in legal departments themselves and need no introduction to how a legal department works, only to your matters. Deployment is possible on site or remotely, and the terms are fixed before the work begins.

What happens to open matters when the engagement ends?

The handover is part of the engagement, not an afterthought. Matters are handed over documented, open deadlines are identified and responsibilities are returned in writing. Where you wish, we stay on individual proceedings as external counsel — without having to be briefed again.
